A two-day intensive firefighting workshop was organized by the Fire Safety Department, Ramanagar, on the 5th and 6th of August 2025. The workshop was attended by five teaching and five non-teaching staff members from The Dalai Lama Institute for Higher Education, along with forty participants from various other organizations. The sessions were conducted by Mr. Ganga Naik, District Fire Officer, and Mr. Premanad Shet, Station Officer from Kanakapura Fire Station. The primary objective of the workshop was to enhance participants’ awareness of fire hazards, strengthen their preparedness, and provide them with practical skills to respond effectively in fire emergencies.
The first day focused on theoretical learning, covering topics such as the common causes of fire, classification of fire based on fuel sources, and the types and correct usage of fire extinguishers. The sessions were interactive, using real-life scenarios to help participants better understand the material. On the second day, practical training was conducted, where participants were given hands-on experience using various types of fire extinguishers. They were taught how to operate them correctly using the PASS technique (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep) and how to identify the appropriate extinguisher for different classes of fire.
Additionally, the workshop covered vital regulatory aspects, including fire safety measures in high-rise buildings and the importance of compliance with the National Building Code (NBC). Participants were introduced to fire evaluation steps to be followed during an emergency, enabling them to assess fire situations and respond accordingly. A set of essential do’s and don’ts during a fire emergency was also shared. Key do’s included staying calm, alerting others, switching off electrical sources if safe to do so, and using fire extinguishers appropriately. The don’ts emphasized avoiding elevators, not panicking or running blindly, and never using water on electrical or oil-based fires.
The workshop proved to be highly beneficial, equipping participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical confidence to handle potential fire-related incidents effectively. The institute extends its sincere appreciation to the Fire Safety Department, Ramanagar, for delivering such a timely and valuable training program.
